Olivers Growing Media

Olivers Professional 100% Peat-Free Compost

Our vision is to supply our customers with a professional grade, 100% peat-free compost that we know is reliable for growing a large selection of plants. We have been trialling peat-free growing media on our Production Nursery and believe we have found the best possible blend of compost and nutrients to give you a high quality dependable product. As with any compost, as the plants develop and grow they use up nutrients contained within the compost so they will need additional feeds. We recommend using Miracle-Gro® feed as your plants develop to ensure they stay healthy and vigorous.

Why Peat-Free? Peatlands store carbon, control flooding and create homes for wildlife. When peat is extracted from these special landscapes they’re damaged forever. In recent years the need to conserve this diminishing natural resource, as well as the flora and fauna that depend on it, has been recognised. Peat bogs are also an important carbon sink: destroying them to make gardens contributes to climate change. The effects of extraction are virtually irreplaceable as peatlands take thousands of years to form. Defra estimates that 2.96 million cubic metres of peat is used in the UK annually, of which 99% is used as growing media and 70% of which is used by gardeners.

Olivers Professional Tomato & Vegetable Planter 100% Peat-Free

During 2022 and 2023 we carried out extensive trials, both indoors and outside to discover the best recipe to ensure our growbags will provide you with outstanding results for both fruit and vegetable crops.

For many people using Peat-Free compost has come with challenges.

Plants require an additional level of nutrients when using peat-free compost and for great results they need a good blend of media within the compost.

Unfortunately many brands do not offer this causing gardeners disappointing results.

However, our trials have taken the guesswork away for you, so you can plant knowing you have the best product for the job. You’ll be using exactly the same compost as we do on our professional Production Nursery.

Olivers Eco Compost

Peat-Free Compost from recycled plant material.

Supplies the soil with valuable organic matter that helps release nutrients to plants.

Ideal for planting trees, mulching and incorporating into soil to improve structure and fertility. Helps to retain moisture.

Available in loose tipped loads as well as 35ltr bags.

This product is not suitable for use in hanging baskets and containers as it is too rich and will burn the plant roots.

Manure

Using manure in the garden has numerous benefits.

Manure is packed with nutrients e.g. nitrogen and phosphates, that plants require. Using manure as fertiliser keeps plants healthy and green. It also adds structure to the soil and helps retain moisture.

Sandy soils – helps water retention.

Clay soils – helps to break them up.

Poor soils – helps by adding nutrients.

It is important to use well rotted manure which is at least two years old as before this time, it will not have been broken down enough to prevent weed seeds. Also, it would be too high in nitrogen and phosphates which could burn the roots of plants.

Available in loose tipped loads as well as bags.
